PBS Western Reserve Commemorates Memorial Day with Special Programming

With roots dating back to the Civil War, Memorial Day is a time-honored U.S. holiday that honors those who lost their lives while defending their country. Join us as we commemorate Memorial Day with special programming airing on PBS Western Reserve (WNEO 45.1 / WEAO 49.1) and Fusion (WNEO 45.1 / WEAO 49.2) channels.

On June 6, 1944, thousands of Allied servicemen landed on the shores of northern France, tasked with liberating Western Europe from Nazi tyranny. To commemorate the Normandy landing, four D-Day veterans gather at The International Museum of World War II outside of Boston, Massachusetts, to share their experiences from that fateful “Day of Days.”

Post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD, affects hundreds of thousands of veterans. Symptoms may include flashbacks, nightmares and severe anxiety, as well as uncontrollable thoughts about the event. This 30-minute documentary, produced by Canton resident Ron Ponder, talks about some of the research and treatments of veterans and the general public of today.

On April 18, 1942, 80 flyers in the U.S. Armed Forces took part in a joint mission between the Navy and Army consisting of 16 B-25 Bomber teams to carry out an air raid on Japan. Through archival footage and interviews with the few remaining surviving raiders, this film honors the men who helped to change the tide of the war in the Pacific.

USS Indianapolis: The Final Chapter

In July 1945, the USS Indianapolis had just delivered “Little Boy,” the atomic bomb destined for Hiroshima, when a Japanese sub sank it. Three hundred sailors went down with the ship, and the 900 survivors drifted for 3 1/2 days, battling sun, thirst, sharks and their own fears. Ultimately, only 316 of them were pulled from the sea alive. The sinking of the ship remains the U.S. Navy’s worst single loss of life at sea.

Less than 3% of those who served during World War II are still alive today. Once they are gone, what will happen to the story of their sacrifice? Through personal accounts of real-life World War II veterans, this local program, dedicated to preserving the history and memories of those who served in the war, honors their sacrifice.
