Explore the legacy of Howard Street — Akron’s “rhythm row” — known for its vibrant jazz scene.

Filmed in March 2026 at the Akron Civic Theatre, this special captures performances and a panel discussion featuring prominent Akron jazz artists and experts as they celebrate a century of local music history. Reflecting on the legacy of Howard Street and drawing connections to the current day, panelists explore the genre’s indelible impact as part of America 250, the nationwide celebration of the country’s semiquincentennial.

Featured guests include:

  • Theron Brown, co-director of the University of Akron’s jazz studies program and the composer of PBS Western Reserve’s THE REMEMBER BALLOONS
  • Chris Coles, co-director of the University of Akron’s jazz studies program
  • Christopher Wilkins, Akron Symphony’s artistic director
  • Rose Vance Grom, a local historian and associate at the Summit County Historical Society

The special is produced by Fred Barrett, PBS Western Reserve’s senior producer of digital content. Following its broadcast premiere, THE HISTORY OF JAZZ IN AKRON will be available to stream on demand at PBSWesternReserve.org, YouTube, and the free PBS App.

“It fills my heart with joy that Akron is being properly recognized for its music history. My hopes are that it helps better appreciate the musicians and artists of the present, while adding a guiding light to the future.”

– Theron Brown

“This quintessentially American art form has flourished in Akron because the city embodies so many of the qualities that make jazz thrive: diversity, mobility, innovation, and strong community. Between the music of Theron Brown and Chris Coles and the contributions of the Akron History Center, the program beautifully captures the deep pride we feel in our city’s rich jazz heritage.”

– Christopher Wilkins
