U.S. Navy sailor Joe George became an unlikely hero when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor in Hawaii on Dec. 7, 1941. He was recognized with a Bronze Star Medal for his actions more than 70 years later.

A USS Vestal crewman, on the “Day of Infamy,” George ignored a direct order to cut the lines from the USS Vestal, which was moored alongside the burning and sinking USS Arizona. The sailor made a crucial decision that saved six lives and impacted future generations.
