Freedom Summer—A Lesson in Perspective

Directions:  Answer the following questions based on varied roles to examine the perspective/point of view of the individuals and groups who were involved in the Freedom Summer. 

  • CORE member
  • SNCC member
  • KKK member
  • Northern white middle aged adult
  • Southern white college student
  • Sheriff in a small Mississippi town

 

Using your assigned/chosen roles, answer the following questions based on the perspective of your role.  Be prepared to discuss! 

  1. Describe your background (age, educational level, race etc)
  2. Describe your point of view on the Civil Rights Movement in general
  3. Are you in favor of or against equality?
  4. What strategies do you use to “fight” for your beliefs (non-violence or violence?)
  5. What would your thoughts on the Freedom Summer be?
