AMERICAN MASTERS Profiles Great Stars

AMERICAN MASTERS Profiles Great Stars

This week, PBS Western Reserve looks at two different and groundbreaking musicians.

We start with singer, songwriter, actor, activist and artist John Lennon. After he left the Beatles, Lennon and his wife, Yoko Ono, moved to New York City. He was able to blend in and almost disappear in one of the most populated places on the planet. In “LENNONYC,” explore how he focused on his private life but still wrote some of his biggest hits such as “Mind Games” and “Whatever Gets You Through the Night.” The profile also features home movies and behind-the-scenes footage from the recording studio where his “Double Fantasy” album came to be. Watch LENNONYC this Monday at 8 PM on Fusion (WNEO 45.2 / WEAO 49.2). If your provider doesn’t carry the Fusion channel, you can find it online on PBS Passport.

If you turned on the radio in the 1970s you heard Roberta Flack. “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face,” “Killing Me Softly” and “The Closer I Get to You” were just some of her award-winning hits. She studied classical piano beginning at age 9, earned a music scholarship to Howard University at 15 and signed a record deal before she was 20. Aside from her gold records and Grammy awards, she’s always been a fierce advocate of civil rights. Learn more about the person behind the music in a new AMERICAN MASTERS special, “Roberta Flack,” this Tuesday at 9 PM on PBS Western Reserve.

We offer lots of great music all year long. For almost 50 years musicians have taken the stage of Austin City Limits. From Loretta Lynn to Elvis Costello you hear the best Saturdays at 10 PM on PBS Western Reserve. On Fusion, we have the best of bluegrass and old-time country music with SONG OF THE MOUNTAINS on Sundays at 9 PM. And, of course, our hometown music series STUDIO C SESSIONS is on every Friday at 8:30 PM.

Whatever your taste, you’ll find it on PBS Western Reserve. But, just like a jukebox, it helps if you put a few quarters in the machine to make it play. If you haven’t become a member of PBS Western Reserve yet, click here and help us keep all this great music (and so much more) on the air for you to enjoy.

Steve creates the PBS Western Reserve television schedules. Long before finding great programs for you to watch he was a radio DJ. He and his wife are avid travelers, preferring unusual vacation spots such as Cuba and Budapest and sailing across the Atlantic (on an ocean liner, not a sailboat). Tops on his list of famous people he’s met is Fred Rogers. A close second is Mick Jagger or maybe Elton John. His favorite PBS show is “Sherlock Holmes” with Jeremy Brett. Or with Benedict Cumberbatch. It’s a toss-up, he says. Either way, he loves looking for new and interesting programs to share with you.
