Under Fire, Under Siege: Strikebreakers in Kent, Ohio

Under Fire, Under Siege: Strikebreakers in Kent, Ohio

PBS Western Reserve (WNEO 45.1 / WEAO 49.1):

Friday, July 1, at 5 PM
Sunday, July 3, at 4 AM

In June 1936, two truckloads of Cleveland strikebreakers crashed through a peaceful picket line in Kent, Ohio. They fired sawed-off shotguns and tear gas in an attempt to intimidate the workers and break a six-week-old strike at the Black & Decker Co. The strikebreakers not only failed to end the strike but had the tables reversed on them as more than 100 strikers and sympathizers firing high-powered rifles at them for six hours. This local production tells the story of the strike, attack and siege.

Schneider Park in Akron seems like your typical family-friendly park. What local residents who enjoy the park may not realize, though, is how many bodies—and secrets—are buried beneath their feet.

From the mid-19th to early 20th century, this green space was the cemetery attached to the county poorhouse, which housed elderly and disabled people of that era.
