Highlights

The “History of Jazz in Akron” panel presentation offered a detailed look at the city’s musical heritage and its modern revival. Featuring historians and professional musicians, the event documented the peak of the Howard Street era and the subsequent impact of urban renewal on the community.

Theron Brown and Christopher Coles, professors in the Jazz Studies department at the University of Akron, performed several songs throughout the event, bringing the historical discussion to life through music. The event also highlighted the essential role of education and local advocacy in preserving Akron’s status as a center for musical innovation.
