Learn to Build and Fly a Kite! Connecting Kites to Ben Franklin’s Lightning Rod

Join in the fun as we build kites, hear from scientists and more in recognition of Ben Franklin, the scientist and inventor. This family event showcases Franklin’s observations and experiments about electrical properties of lightning that led to the lightning rod and scientific terms such as positive and negative charge—and even the electrical battery.

At this virtual event, we discussed the upcoming documentary BENJAMIN FRANKLIN: A FILM BY KEN BURNS, showed film clips and held discussions with a focus on Franklin as a scientist, writer, diplomat—with a major emphasis on the scientist side. Traci Manning from the Mahoning Valley Historical Society discussed Franklin’s scientific connections to the local area.
